Towards more accessible theatre.
Tan Tan Teatro integrates accessibility into creation, research and its relationship with audiences. Through the ETICA project, we test tools and practices designed to make performances more accessible before, during and after the event.
Our approach
Accessibility as part of the theatrical process
For us, accessibility is not something added at the end. It enters the work on stage, the preparation of materials, technological choices and dialogue with audiences. Tools vary according to the production and the individual performance, so we state what is actually planned and distinguish it from work that is still being tested.
Tools and practices
More ways to follow a performance
Surtitles
When scheduled, surtitles may accompany a performance in Italian, simplified Italian, English, French or other languages specified for that performance.
Audio description
We prepare and test audio description designed around the stage experience. Availability is indicated for each production or performance.
Screens and smartphones
Content can be projected onto a screen or backdrop or, in prepared configurations, displayed on audience members’ smartphones.
Preparatory materials
Before a performance we may provide information on duration, structure, sensory features, the stage environment and other material useful for preparing a visit.

ETICA
Esplorazioni Teatrali e Innovazione per una Cultura Accessibile
ETICA is a public engagement project at the University of Turin. Tan Tan Teatro is one of the contexts in which research, theatre practice, technology and dialogue with audiences can meet through real performances. The project tests tools and practices that can be shared, treating accessibility as part of theatre culture rather than as a service added afterwards.

Sténtor
Lightweight technology for more accessible performances
Sténtor is software developed from theatre practice within ETICA. It brings together surtitles, translations, audio description, live operator cues and delivery of content to screens and audience devices.
